THE AQUABLU STORY: HOW A QUESTION BECAME A CHALLENGER
It started with a question.
It became a challenger to an entire industry.
In 2018, Marnix was on a surf trip in Cape Town. Beautiful beaches, endless waves, and plastic bottles everywhere. But something didn’t add up.
Why were we shipping water halfway around the world when it was already coming out of our taps?
Back home, he couldn’t shake the question. The alternatives weren’t good enough, so he decided to build something better.
Armed with an idea, an investment from his family, and absolutely no experience building water technology, he convinced his best friend Marc to join him.
And just like that, two best friends became founders. Aquablu was born.
But solving bottled water was only the beginning. In 2020, we had a breakthrough.
We had mastered water purification. And realized we were already 90% of the way to making the entire drink on the spot.
No bottles. No shipping water around the world. Just great drinks, made fresh where people need them.
Suddenly, we weren’t just challenging bottled water. We were challenging the entire beverage industry.
But we knew that changing an industry would take more than a sustainable alternative.
If we wanted to move the world beyond single-use packaging, being better for the planet wasn’t enough. We had to create a fundamentally better experience for people.
In 2023, we launched REFILL, bringing great-tasting, functional drinks directly into workplaces.
And that’s when things took off.
Today, hundreds of thousands of people use Aquablu across 16 European countries. We’ve become one of Europe’s fastest-growing companies, ranking second in the Netherlands.
All driven by one obsession: the user behind the product.
And we’re only getting started.
